What are Inside Out Japan walking tours?
Inside Out Japan’s walking tours are guided experiences led by TSTs (Travel Storytellers (TSTs). TSTs are local expert guides who bring every experience to life with unique anecdotes and perspectives, personalizing their approach to cater to the unique needs and interests of each group. These tours take you through neighborhoods and everyday life so you can discover a more authentic side of Japan beyond the usual tourist spots. Choose from half-day or full-day options that cater to various points of interest, including (but definitely not limited to!) food, history, nature, and cultural traditions.
For those interested in a guided experience at their own pace, InsideOut Japan also offers self-paced audio tours, powered by Neko Smart Guide. Available exclusively through the IOJ app, you will have access to destination information, local insights, and voice narration as you navigate carefully curated routes. Plus, IOJ’s unique technology lets you ask questions or request more information on any given place, so you get the most out of your audio guide experience.

How do walking tours work?
Our walking tours take place mainly on foot and/or using public transportation. Our Travel Storytellers guide our guests step by step, sharing stories, pointing out hidden gems, and helping you to see the city from the perspective of a local.
How many people are in each group?
We require a minimum of 2 guests, and group sizes are no larger than 12 guests per departure (the maximum may vary depending on existing bookings and special requests). This allows for an ideal touring experience, with each guest able to interact with their Travel Storyteller, and the Travel Storytellers able to personalize each experience based on the unique interests of guests.
Where are the walking tours offered?
We organize walking tours in multiple cities across Japan, including Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Each city offers carefully designed routes that speak to the interests of our guests, including culture, history, food, and daily life.
Are the walking tours suitable for all ages?
Walking tours generally have no minimum age limit so anyone can join! However, as some tours involve a fair amount of walking, please consider your comfort level before booking. You’ll see an approximate step count included with each of our tour descriptions to help you find what’s right for you.
In which languages are the walking tours available?
Walking tours are mainly offered in Italian and English.
What happens if the tour starts in bad weather?
Tours generally operate rain or shine, though the route may change depending on weather conditions. Some services may be canceled in the case of extreme weather events, which will be communicated to guests with as much notice as possible via email and through the IOJ app.
How long do the walking tours last?
The duration generally ranges from 2 to 9 hours, depending on the itinerary, travel distances, and time allocated for visits and transfers. Check out the duration details in each trip description to ensure you pick an experience that fits with your interests, ability, and schedule.
What is the level of difficulty?
Depending on the itinerary, walking tours may involve a moderate to fast walking pace, with breaks along the way. They are suitable for most people in good health.
Are the walking tours suitable for people with reduced mobility, strollers, or wheelchairs?
Some tours include stairs, uneven roads, architectural barriers, and the use of public transportation such as buses, subways, and trains. If you have specific needs, we recommend contacting InsideOut Japan before booking to receive personalized guidance.
Are walking tours customizable?
Walking tours are shared experiences and cannot be customized, except in rare cases. If you wish to personalize your itinerary, we recommend booking a full-day or half-ay private service, which you can do by sending your request to tomtjtokyo@mtj-corp.com.
What happens if I get separated from the group or decide to leave early?
Please inform your Travel Storyteller before leaving the group. Early departure or interruption of the experience is not eligible for a refund.
Can I join if I’m late?
Out of respect for all participants, meeting time is generally 10 minutes before the official starting time. If you arrive late, the group may not be able to wait, and refunds cannot be issued. For this reason, Travel Storytellers stay in contact with travelers in the days leading up to the tour date.
Does InsideOut Japan offer private tours?
